Wish I Lived Closer! Jongewaard's Bake 'N Broil's Awesome Comfort Food

if i lived in long beach, jongewaard's would be my neighborhood joint hands down. comforting comfort food. delicious desserts for when my sweet tooth strikes. friendly service. and the best part is the reasonable prices. what can i say? i'm a cheapo.

a few friends and i tried out the place a few weeks ago, and they all agreed: we'd get fatter if jongewaard's were nearer. it's got a casual, small-town restaurant feel where you see lots of silver-haired old timers digging into cakes and pies and omelettes and other goodies.

i didn't have to look at the menu to know what i wanted: their famous chicken pot pie.

it didn't disappoint with its flaky crust and velvety filling of chicken, carrots and peas. we had two at our table!

our table also got a big and fresh spinach, mushroom and cheese omelette with a side of spiced hashbrowns.

and the hearty bake 'n broil platter came with a burger patty, hashbrowns and buttery garlic bread.

we were stuffed, but we made sure to save room for dessert. when the hostess walked us through the restaurant to seat us, we had spied the kitchen baking up a fresh red velvet cake and another waiter carrying out a tall, frosted chocolate cake. we went for the chocolate cake.

i gotta say though, their boysenberry pie--warmed and topped with a mound of vanilla ice cream--was the perfect end to the meal. sweet, fruity and tart.

the whole meal for the four of us (which included soup or salad for the entrees) plus two diet cokes cost $47! sigh. i could use a slice of pie right about now.
